The project seeks to deepen young people’s understanding of CSE, support them to raise their voices and demand CSE, and to push back against growing opposition to CSE in their communities.

We hosted an intensive 2-day virtual training workshop in February for young CSE and SRHR advocates from Cameroon and Tanzania. Through reflection, contextual analysis and sharing their lived realities, young advocates were able to articulate their priorities and put forward more positive, youth-centred narratives on CSE.

impact of environmental, gender and economic injustice on communities, or they may be campaigns to change particular situations that communities are struggling with.

The action must be implemented and completed by 30 November 2024.

Proposals may be for a maximum of ZAR30,000 (Thirty thousand South African Rands). Amounts allocated are likely to be less than this to reach as many applicants as possible.

Proposals must be completed and submitted online, click here to apply.
The deadline for submission is 14h00 (SAST) on 3 April 2024. You are encouraged to complete the online application as early as possible. You can watch a 3-minute video here to guide you with your online submission.

What will be supported?
There is a maximum of ZAR700,000 available for this call, so ACT Ubumbano will need to make decisions about where to allocate funding. The following will be considered:

  1. The proposed work is led by or directly involves people who are affected by the issue.
  2. The proposed work seeks to change the root causes or conditions of injustice.
  3. The proposed work has potential to bring new knowledge that can be shared with others.
  4. The budget is in proportion to the action that will be undertaken.
  5. The organisation has demonstrated capability to undertake the action, or has a plan to work with others who have the capability.

Who can apply?
The opportunity is open to any registered non-profit organisation or association that is part of the ACT Ubumbano network, or willing to work with ACT Ubumbano partner organisations in Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland (Eswatini), Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Any funding is intended to help with taking action for change. It is not intended for general or core support for organisations, although some of the funds may  be used for organisational costs.

What will NOT be supported!
ACT Ubumbano will NOT support any action that undermines the dignity of people and the earth, or that are:

  • Homophobic or discriminatory against people from the LGBTI+ community,
  • Sexist and undermining of the dignity of women,
  • Xenophobic and discriminatory against foreign nationals,
  • Generally harmful to any vulnerable or marginalised group in society, or
  • Environmentally destructive and working against efforts to fight climate change.

Who is ACT Ubumbano?
ACT Ubumbano is a resource to organisations working for social justice in different fields. We believe that there is strength in collaboration, and by sharing knowledge and experience – as well as by linking up for joint action where possible – communities can more effectively defend their dignity and bring change.

Questions can be addressed to thabo@actubumbano.org.

Welcome to 2024

The team wishes you a very joyful 2024, and that your work sees great success in supporting those who defend their dignity. We ended 2023 on a high note with the Solidarity Hub and the Inter-Religious Convention. Click on the links to view the dynamic presentations, or to check out the picture galleries. And of course, we worked with Freedoms SA to launch the ClearMe app to help with expunging criminal records in SA.

This year we hope that we can do even more in support of local voice and action. We will continue to convene spaces for critical reflection on our practice. We will carry on looking for opportunities to raise more funds that can be used in support of local struggles. And we hope to amplify the voices of those who resist, who fight against injustice wherever they find it. Look out for the launch of Akhona’s Story – an animated resource to help with community organising. And we will invite proposals soon for the Solidarity Support Grants. This year’s Solidarity Hub will happen in October, and in June we will convene a Solidarity Hub in Europe for the first time. There’s a lot to be done, and we will keep you updated. We look forward to journeying with you all in pursuit of a more just and peaceful world.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP)

The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme was first introduced as the Small-Scale Grant Assistance Programme in 1989, and aims to assist Non-Profit Organisations (NPO’s) and local authorities by supporting relatively small development projects which have a direct and immediate impact on the well-being of disadvantaged communities at the grass-roots level. The Embassy of Japan in the Republic of South Africa invites applications from South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini.

Partner Profile – Durban South Community Advice Centre

In many communities of the Durban South Basin, people struggle with legal issues related to housing, family, debt, crime, property, and other matters that affect their well-being. Those who are poor, geographically isolated, or otherwise vulnerable often cannot obtain assistance in solving their justice problems. They may suffer under discriminatory laws or lack the legal means to enforce norms that should protect them. Community-based programme initiatives, like DSCAC, contribute to helping communities that lack access to the legal system to resolve their justice and community-based issues.

Towards the end of 2020, a group of friends and concerned individuals got together, through a series of formal and informal meetings, to have discussions, centred around ‘community upliftment’. This space would operate as a legal entity with the ability to raise funds for projects and services that would benefit those in need.
