The Zimbabwe Coalition of Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) and ACT Alliance Malawi, in partnership with ACT Ubumbano, have been running training sessions for activists on how to use the Ubumbano Voice App to tell their stories of resistance against injustice. 15 community activists from 4 Districts (Machinga, Blantyre, Mulanje and Nsanje) participated in the Malawi session, while the Zimbabwe training has 20 activists from Bulawayo and surrounds. These mark the beginning of our expansion of the Voice App as a platform for community stories of resistance and struggle to be heard more widely. Click here to read some of the stories.
Our Board met recently to kickstart a process of strategic reflection for ACT Ubumbano, and will meet again in November to take the process further. Among other things, we will be reflecting on the outcomes of review processes that some of you have been involved in. An independent evaluation of ACT Ubumbano is nearing completion. We also concluded an outcomes harvesting process that captures the impact of our partnerships with many of you, in your own voice. We will be publishing both reports in the coming weeks.
You will also have seen that we paused the solidarity action support facility temporarily. We need to consolidate following an overwhelming response, and find ways to deepen this work through documenting and learning from the experiences of activists and communities in the region. In addition to a CV and cover letter, we request that interested parties provide a brief concept note [2-3 page max] indicating a proposed approach to this work and an estimate of the costs to be incurred.
ACT Alliance, through its Gender Community of Practice (CoP) in Africa and in collaboration with ACT Ubumbano, seeks the services of a suitably qualified Consultant to support processes of developing congregational and/or institution specific gender justice policies in order to advance efforts to create safe faith spaces. ACT Alliance is a global coalition of more than 155 churches and affiliated organisations working together in over 140 countries to create positive and sustainable change in the lives of poor and marginalized people.

Fatima Zahra (S.A) Women’s Organization (FZWO) is an Islamic faith-inspired non–profit organization that was formed in 1994 with a mandate to empower women and the community by providing education to vulnerable groups. Its vision is to provide religious and moral guidance while uplifting communities. FZWO’s work is based on the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad and his purified household. The actual practices of the Prophet himself and his purified family provide further guidance about how Muslims might translate the lessons of the Qur’an.
In 2009, FZWO, established a college and a home for less privileged children. Currently, the enrolment is at 90 students. FZWO has deepened its interventions to include empowering women and girls to access SRHR within the context of their faith. It collaborates with the Ahlul Bayt Islamic Guidance Council, an Islamic sister organization, named after the household of Prophet Muhammad, whose mandate also focuses on interfaith dialogues, religious training, youth, and development, among other things.
During covid19 lockdown we made and distributed face masks to less privileged families in Epworth. We also made and distributed sanitizers at funerals and religious gathering of both Muslim and Christians, and donated exercise books, pens, pencils, and office stationery for learners in rural schools in Zimbabwe.

ACT Ubumbano will not be accepting new proposals for solidarity actions for now. There continues to be an overwhelming response from activists and organisations throughout the region, and our approach of seeking and cultivating new partnerships for social justice takes time. And so we ask again that you please hold off on submitting new proposals until we re-open the window for new applications. There will be opportunity in the future. Please keep an eye on our newsletter and website for any announcements.

The SMALL PROJECT AND SUPPORT FUND (SPSF) aims to empower communities to act and participate in their own development through actions that are designed, implemented and owned by the communities themselves. This is a call for applications for funding for activities that provide an immediate response to Human Rights violations (Component 2) in South Africa through, for example, legal support and/or mobilisation. The activities will have the overall aim of empowering the vulnerable communities through the process and will be focussed on one or more of the following:
The calls seeks to support 8 organisations under component 2, the maximum grant amount is 75.000 ZAR per funded activity under 2021/22 financial year. There are no geographical focus areas. The funded organisation will need to be able to demonstrate experience and capacity in working in the human rights space with a proven track record. The maximum period for the implementation of the emergency activities is 1 month. Particular priority will be given to organisations located in the Gauteng and Kwa Zulu who were affected by the civil unrest that was noted in the country.
