I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for inviting me to participate in the 2026 Act Ubumbano Youth Hub. It has been a privilege to share space with such a diverse group of young leaders, and changemakers from across the region. Thank you for creating an environment where honest conversations, and meaningful reflection could take place. This year’s youth hub was especially remarkable because the ACT Ubumbano team took the time to consult a group of young people, and considered our inputs in the planning process.
I deeply appreciate the care and intentionality that went into designing the Hub. The flexibility of the “programme” certainly stood out for me. It wasn’t rigid, and to echo my new bestie Jessica’s words: “The lack of expectations” made the experience unexpected and all the more worthwhile
The prompted questions and real life case scenario that KG shared, allowed us to reflect on a more personal level, outside of our work. The intimate space allowed us to intentionally and effectively listen, learn, and challenge our own perspectives. I left this year’s hub feeling inspired by the stories, experiences, and commitment of everyone who participated. I also connected with some of the participants and invited them to my community to help contribute to the work we do.
Some highlights from the Youth Hub that stood out for me:
- The food. Oh my gosh, in all honesty, I was very hesitant to try it out. It looked too clean, too healthy, and normally that kind of food is not pleasant nor favourful. When I eventually gave it a try, it really tasted like home. It reminded me of my childhood and the food my grandma cooked for me during school holidays. Additionally, my digestive system loved it! Suffice to say, my bowel movements were over the moon for that period.
- The last day’s performances. The delivery of each group’s presentation was so wholesome and versatile. I thoroughly enjoyed how each group used art as a form of expression. Would love to see more of this style of presentation for future hubs.
- Another significant highlight for me was taking Jessica, Bento and Mpule on the Gautrain and Sandton City. It was amazing seeing how excited they were to ride on the Gautrain for the first time. I will say, I was very nervous to go with them because of the anti-immigration protests. But we braved it together and they enjoyed their first McDonald’s meal ever!
- Last, but certainly not least, visiting the late former president’s office. There was something about being in there that felt so grounded. There is a wall or feature that contains information about how other countries participated in the anti-apartheid movement and the transition of South Africa into a democratic state. I had no idea some of these countries played a role. That was a very interesting discovery.
Thank you once again for your trust, hospitality, and for investing in young people who are committed to building more just, inclusive, and sustainable communities. I look forward to more hubs, including the highly sort after Solidarity Hub.
