We have communicated with the 68 organisations that will receive grants of R15,000 this year, and have also informed the remaining 175 of our regret at not being able to support their proposals. These small grants will hopefully have a big impact in supporting the local agency and activism of people in the region. We will continue to look for other resources to support local struggles. We have begun a dedicated Partners’ Work page on our website that will profile the actions by people in defence of their dignity and that of their communities.

The ACT Ethiopia Forum hosted members of the Act Alliance Gender Community of Practice (COP) on 21-23 May. With a focus on the intersection of faith and social justice, participants interrogated a range of topics relating to gender, faith and rights, including transformative masculinities, gender and security, and our own efforts at enhancing gender equality and social justice in faith communities. Zanele is the Co-chair of the COP and represented the work we are doing in this part of the continent.

Together with Lulibo Projects, we had a successful launch of Akhona’s Journey in Cape Town on 23rd May. Activists in the room and online viewed the animated story, and then engaged with a panel to look at the challenges facing young girls and how resources like this can help in the struggle to defend the dignity of all. A record of the event is currently being edited and will be shared soon. You can view the 34-minute animation here, and access the book here. The resource pack will be a useful tool those who are engaging in community organising, and you can see pictures of the launch here. Akhona’s Journey is a seven-part animated video series and booklet about the life of a young girl growing up in a township, confronting adversities that challenge her childhood and family dynamics. It is a compelling narrative about survival in the face of adversity, and is designed not just to shed light on social justice issues, but to serve as a tool for community organisers and activists in their solidarity work with people who resist oppression wherever they are. Lulibo Projects, with support from ACT Ubumbano, has developed the tool and will launch it on 23 May 2024. An invitation to participate in this exciting event sent shortly.

One of the outcomes of the Solidarity Hub in 2023 was a commitment to work more closely with young people in the region. It seemed appropriate to collaborate with IYCS Africa, a faith-based international student movement that also uses the SEE JUDGE ACT method as a tool for deep reflection and analysis. IYCS is present in 32 countries in Africa and 81 globally, and is collaborating with ACT Ubumbano to convene a 2-day Learning Hub in June that will bring together 30 young people from Southern Africa. Using the SJA method, they will look critically at the everyday lived experience of youth and reflect on the issues, problems and challenges they face daily. Through this engagement new connections will be forged to strength solidarity in the struggles for dignity, justice and peace.
Having a criminal record is a significant barrier to a decent life for many South Africans, an injustice made more odious by the inefficiencies of the official administration and the arbitrariness of how anyone can end up with a record. Since the launch of the ClearMe App a year ago, Freedoms SA reports that there have been over 8000 users seeking information. There are also renewed advocacy efforts for policy change at the Department of Justice and South African Police Services. You can access the app here.
