Green Anglicans (Anglican Church of Southern Africa Environmental Network)

Green Anglicans is a movement started by the Anglican Church of Southern Africa that is focused on empowering, encouraging, and holding the church accountable for caring for the earth that God has graciously placed us on.

Who We Are

The Environmental Network of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa was established in 2004, chaired by Bishop Geoff. Two Diocesan networks were formed (Johannesburg Anglican Environmental Initiative and the Natal Environmental Network. The Diocesan Environmental Group was formed in Cape Town Diocese in 2011.

In 2012 a Provincial Coordinator, Rev Rachel Mash was appointed The Network became a movement under the name of “Green Anglicans” and has now spread to Central Africa (Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe), Kenya, DRC and Portugal.

The Anglican Church has a long-standing concern for environmental issues.

The Anglican Communion identifies the fifth mark of mission as:

“To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the earth.”

Our Mission

Resource and inspire Anglicans in the spirituality of Caring for Creation.

Encourage individuals to live sustainable lives.

Equip Churches and Dioceses for practical actions as Earth-keepers.

Challenge and network individuals, Churches, and Dioceses for prophetic acts of advocacy.

What We Do (Key Focus Areas)

  1. We offer Eco-theology courses and retreats for Clergy and laypeople.
  2. We are committing to mobilizing, inspiring and equipping young people on issues of care for creation, climate change, eco-restoration and climate justice.
  3. Develop material which can be used for children, youth and clergy.
  4. Play a role in mobilizing the Ecumenical community within our region to take part on issues of caring for creation and advocacy.
  5. We encourage churches to connect their members with creation through outdoor services, spiritual hikes and celebrating environmental events.
